Practice Questions

I have decided to post additional information that we are reviewing during SI sessions, below is a list of some of the questions that we have been covering.

  • If an allele affects more than one phenotypeic characteristic it is called?
  • What is an example of co-dominance, what does the phenotype look like?
  • What is an example of incomplete dominance, and what does the phenotype look like?
  • Give 2 examples of sex linked diseases.
  • A woman that is not colorblind has children with a man that is not colorblind and their first son is colorblind:
    •      What is the genotype of the mother?
    •      What percentage of their daughters will be colorblind?
  • Sickle cell anemia is caused by what type of mutation?
  • Down syndrome is caused by what type of mutation?
  • If part of a chromosome is broken off and lost what type of mutation has occurred?
  • If a chromosomes genes were 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8 and then you checked that same chromosome again later and the genes read 1,2,6,5,4,3,7,8 what mutation has occurred?
  • Draw a translocation mutation.
  • Why can mutations be dangerous, what causes the problem?
  • What holds the ends of a chromosome together and eliminates "sticking together"?
    •      What are other purposes of the __________ (above item)?
  • Gamete vs. Somatic
    •      what is the ploidy of each, and what does that mean?
    •      what process formed each type of cell?
    •      where would you find each cell on your body?
  • In sexual reproduction __________ happens to form a diploid __________.
  • If lizard eggs turn female when hot and male when cool what is causing the change?
    • Does this event change the genotype of the new baby lizard?
  • Who proposed that genes are present in chromosomes?
  • If one gene interferes with the expression of another gene it is termed?
  • Who studied white eyed flies? What is the scientific name of the fly?
  • What kinds of cells have huge amounts of telomerase?

Today I found a genetics exam that was posted by a high school teacher, much of the exam will be easy to answer but gives you a lot of practice with punnet squares. Let me know if you have any questions.  http://southwest.mpls.k12.mn.us/sites/ad26dc17-c8bc-4970-8795-bae99167aab3/uploads/Genetics_test.pdf
